DescriptionHinuera Rail Accident - August 12 1958 (20353131022).jpg |
On August 12 1958 a fatal rail accident took place in Hinuera, near Matamata, Waikato, New Zealand. A goods train en route from Rotorua to Frankton struck a motor car at 7.40pm at the Hinuera level crossing. The train struck the Austin Sheerline driven by Mr Gunter Meisel with one other passenger, Diane Clark. Mr Meisel succumbed to his injuries a week later on August 19. After his death, the estate of Mr Meisel and Ms Clark lodged a claim against the New Zealand Railway Department for negligence. In court, a jury decided in favour of New Zealand Railways and the claim of the Meisel family and Ms Clark was unsuccessful. The judge commented that there was adequate signage for the level crossing and it was impossible to discount the notion that Mr Meisel had been speeding. Shown here is the report completed by the train driver B.D Wackrow a day after the incident. Archives New Zealand’s Wellington Office also holds the Coronial Inquest (archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=23853681) for Gunter Meisel. Our Auckland Office has the court file generated by the claim against New Zealand Rail (archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=23919989)

Rail Safety Week is an annual Australasian-wide initiative where rail operators and other organisations across New Zealand and Australia come together to raise awareness about rail safety and encourage safe behaviour around trains and tracks. This year’s theme is 'Expect Trains' which aims to address complacency and distraction. For Rail Safety Week, Archives New Zealand is highlighting a selection of items that share the messages promoted by Rail Safety Week – such as making sure you cross tracks at appropriate times and places when permitted to do so. The images selected include promotional material from the 1980’s to get the message across to children regarding the dangers trains pose and an image from the 1950’s where NZ Rail considered changing the colour of trains to make them more visible. More information on Rail Safety Week can be found here: www.tracksafe.co.nz/media/rail-safety-week
