Its cost at that time is esti-mated to have amounted to 1,000,000 Frenchcrowns. After the occupation of Illinois by theBritish, Fort Chartres still remained the seat ofgovernment imtil 1772, when one side of thefortification was washed away by a freshet, andheadquarters were transferred to Kaskaskia.The first common law court ever held in the Mis-sissippi Valley was establislied here, in 1768, bythe order of Colonel Wilkins of the Englisharmy.
