PETER STUYVESANTDirector-General of New Netherland for the Dutch West India Co.,1646-1664, in which latter year he was forced to surrender to the Englishfleet. He lived on his farm in New York known as Bouwerij (Bowery),and his pugnacious character has given him prominence in history. Bornin Holland, 1602; died at New York, August, 1682. From the originalpainting loaned to N. Y. Historical Society by Robert Van RensselaerStuyvesant.
