nderful modelling of all the details, the brownish-red local tone of the flesh, the gray of the shadows, and the very light general effe6l show this pictureto be a transition from the second to the thirdmanner of Holbein, and that it may have beenpainted about 1530. This picture was lent to the Tudor Exhibitionby Lord Warwick. In 1861 Sir George Scharf gave in the Archaeo-logia a note of such portraits of Henry VIII. asare deserving of special notice, from bearing indi-cations of the dates at which they were executed. They are thirteen in number, and may be shortlyindicated as follows : 1. The first portrait mentioned by Scharf, although not perhaps the earliest, is a kneelingfigure of a monarch in the great east window ofSt. Margarets Church, Westminster, to which thenames of Henry VII. and Prince Arthur havebeen assigned. I feel, however, satisfied that itreally represents Henry VIII. as a young man,and that the kneeling queen on the opposite sideof the window is Catherine of Arragon.
