The early ancestors landed firstin New England, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and North Carolina,where the great-grandfather, Robert Williams, settled. At least halfa dozen of the paternal forefathers named were among ten of thefirst settlers of the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts, and his pater-nal grandmother was of the famous Stanton family—an aunt ofEdwin M. Stanton, Lincolns historic secretary of war. RobertStanton, the founder of the American branch, settled in Rhode Islandabout 1640, having been born in England in 1599. He came to Chicago in the year ofhis graduation, and for a brief period was employed in the privateoffice of E. S. Chesbrough, city engineer. Following a few monthsservice in the Alilwaukee city engineers office, he became connectedwith the Milwaukee, Lake Shore & Western and the Chicago, Bur-lington & Quincy railroads, in the work of locating and constructinglines in Wisconsin and Illinois. In 1872 he accepted a position withthe city of Chicago under City Engineer Chesbrough, continuing asassistant engineer, superintendent of sewerage and city engineer untilthe fall of 1878. While assistant engineer he had especial charge ofthe designing and construction of the Fullerton avenue conduit.
