onic Lodge. Heretired from farming and moved to Breckenridge in 1909, where he diedDec. 27, 1913. Mrs. Dale still resides in Breckenridge, and retains all ofthe land in Daviess County, formerly owned by her husband. She is amember of the Methodist Church. Mrs. Dale has 28 grandchildren andsix great-grandchildren. Lawrence Dale had many friends in this county and was one of themost honored and respected citizens. Rufus Whitton, deceased, was one of the well known men of Gen-try County. He was born in Miller Township, Aug. 5, 1845, the son ofRedmond and Margaret Jane (Patton) Whitton, latter the daughter ofJames Patton, one of the pioneer settlers of the county. Rufus Whitton was an extensive land holder and stockman. Hehad holdings of more than 1,450 acres of land in Miller and Athenstownships. His home place lay just east of Whitton Station, named forhim, and the place is still owned by his widow. As a feeder of cattle andhogs, Mr. Whitton made the market in his community for the corn

LAWRENCE T. DALE £ HISTORY OF DAVIESS AND GENTRY COUNTIES 849 raised there. He was a man whose alert intellect made it possible forhim to engage successfully in many enterprises and interests. He helpedto organize the Bank of Albany and was a director in the institution formore than 25 years. Later on, he assisted in the organization of theFarmers Bank at McFall and there, too, he was a director. Mr. Whittonwas a Democrat and was active in the work of his party although henever cared to hold office. He joined the Presbyterian Church at thehistoric Mt. Zion and for 25 years served as an elder in the church. Hedied Oct. 15, 1912, and his remains are buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.As a business man and as a citizen of his community, Mr. Whitton wasaccounted a man of progressive ideas and high ideals. Rufus Whitton was married Nov. 5, 1874, to Mary Jane Lowe, adaughter of Anderson and Zilphy (McNatt) Lowe, pioneers of GentryCounty. Anderson Lowe was born in Tennessee, the son of Stephen
