The early history of this company is a thrilling story, for its foundershad to encounter not only the usual difficulties of a new and untried enterprise,but to fight for control of their company when a traitorous minority interesttried to seize possession of and sell the company to the Standard Oil Company,which at that time was all-powerful in the petroleum industry and used methodsto maintain that position which were long ago discountenanced by the courts.After a few years, however, the company became thoroughly established, andbefore Mr. Benson died in Februarj, 1888, he had the pleasure of knowingthat he had founded a great and successful enterprise. The Tide Water Pipe Company, Ltd., was merged into the Tide WaterOil Company in 1907, but with no change in stockholders. Stevens, of Brewerton, New York, and a granddaughter of Oliver Stevens,a native of Connecticut, who was a soldier of the Revolution and the first set-tler of what is now the town of Brewerton. Miss Stevens father. JudgeStevens, as he was called, held for nearly forty years the office of justice of thepeace in his town; twice was appointed county judge; was one of the organ-izers of the first plank road built in the United States (that running fromSyracuse to Brewerton) ; and was for thirty years an elder in the Church ofthe Disciples at Brewerton. Three children were born of this marriage: RobertDix, of further mention; William Sumner, born February 21, 1864; andBessie, born March 22, 1866.
