Fromearly boyhood he was trained to habits of industry, spending his spare hours in the ■axe factory, of which his father was superintendent, and working there during schoolvacations. For two years after he left school he was employed as a mechanic inthe works. Though he was a good machinist and, accordine to the standards ofthat time, he had before him a promising opportunity for advancement, he thoughtthat trade and business was more attractive as aiT occupation, and at the age ofeighteen he went to w^ork as clerk in the general store at East Douglas. .After twoyears in this position, he became a salesman in the drv goods store of Horace Sheldon& Company in Worcester. Another chapter in his life was devoted to manufacturing, and there again headded to his knowledge of business. In 1874 he began to manufacture tape, webbingand other narrow fabrics in Worcester under the firm name of C. H. Hutchiiis &Company. He occupied one floor of the building on Allen court, then occupied inpart also by L. J. Knowles & Brothers, loom manufacturers. Afterward this businesswas incorporated as the Hutchins Narrow Fabric Company. Mr. Hutchins alsomanufactured woolen goods. His business prospered and he had become fixed inhis determination to continue in that line of business, devoting his ability and energyto selling his products, superintending his factory and extending his business.
