is beautified with smooth andwell-kept drives and foot-paths, abounds in the luxuriantshade of hundreds of pines, and promises to become in time avery beautiful city of the dead. There is a small burying-ground at West Farms, one at West Parish, and anothernorth of Westfield village, belonging to the Catholic Church. These grounds, already mentioned, are of comparativelyrecent origin. The oldest graveyard in the town is found onMechanics Street, Westfield, for there the earliest settlersburied their dead, and there may be seen many old headstonesdating as far back as the seventeenth century, the oldest nowdiscernible being of date 1683. There are doubtless in thatground graves of earlier date, but they bear no headstones tomark their age, or to say who sleeps below. Appended willbe found a record of some of the earliest inscriptions : Abigail, wife uf Jolin Sackett, 1690; John Rout, 1087; Edward, son of Geo.Griswold, 1688, aged 27; Cornet Thomas Dewey, 1690, aged 32; Elizabetli, wife
