h a piece of board for an oar, at about 6. P. M.,and had made nearly the Maryland shore when I heard the puf-fing of a steamer, and I made signals and stood for the channel. As soon as she came up to me she hove to and lowered a boatand took me aboard, where, when I told my tale, some couldhardly believe me, but some of our men being on board soonproved my identity and where I was missing. The doctor soon examined my wound and dressed it, andhanded me in charge of the steward, who soon showed me somewater to have a wash and what was equally agreeable a gooddrink of old brandv and a g-ood meal included, somethino- I hadnot enjoyed for some time, but the excitement that had kept meup was fast dying out and I was fast becoming helpless, but agood nights rest soon refreshed me and in the m-orning we madeAlexandria, it being a hospital steamer. I was sent to this hospi-tal and as soon as I get over my severe trip I will be north. Give my love to all the family, From your son, P. AI. Walton.

COLONEL TUCKER, Second Regiment, New Jersc) Volunteers. Killed at Battle of Gaines Mills. FIRST NEW JERSEY BRIGADE. 353 Appendix C. The First, Second and Third Regiments. THREE-YEAR MEN AT CAMP OEDEN. I enlisted as private for three years in a Burlington company, known as the Knowlton Rifles, in May, 1861. This company, itwas originalh^ intended, should be a part of the four regimentsthat went out first fromi New Jersey, and served three monthsaround Washington, their service and their presence there prob-ably being, at that jimcture, of more importance than they everreceived credit for. Our company was too late to get in the three-months men, and when it was announced in the little upper roomover a beer saloon at the corner of Broad and Main streets, Bur-lington—which room and saloon are still there—that, if wewanted to go we would have to enlist for three years instead ofthree months, some of the men went away, but not many, and,in a short tim-e the company was filled to- loi men
