as an unbroken line of spectators everywhere, and in front of the houses,the fair daughters of Arlington were waving flags and handkerchiefs, andmen and women and children were saluting us with loud hurrahs. It wasnot the strains of music that attracted these people and caused their wilddemonstrations, for no band accompanied us, not even a solitary drum.It was the patriotic inspiration of the occasion that drew the people from theirhomes and business vocations, to witness our departure and join in thepublic farewell. It was said that we presented an impressive and warlikeappearance. The march was a complete ovation and it had served itsintended purpose, for the crowd had left the station to follow us and weapproached the train with ease and entered the cars. There were moregood-byes, and more tears, and then we began our journey. We were leavinga people whose patriotism and generosity were not exceeded and probablynot equalled by any other community in the State of the same size. The

They were more than determined and more than pa-triotic, for after expending thousands of dollars for our education and equip-ment, they sacrificed their pride by permitting us to enter upon our dutiesunder auspices not at fu-st contemplated. It is doubtful if Arlington wouldhave so willingly contributed for our organization and equipment had itthen been known or conjectured that we should not serve in a MassachusettsRegiment, and so it was all the more creditable to them for ratifying thesolution of the problem that finally confronted the company. It may have been thought by some at the time that it was a mistake toenroll under the flag of New York, and there was considerable surpriseexpressed that Gov.
