Educational work in the Philippines waspressed from the very beginning of Americancontrol. Our military authorities reopenedthe Manila schools, making attendance com-pulsory. In a short time the number ofschools in the archipelago doubled. BySeptember, 1901, the commission hadpassed a general school law, and had placedthe schools throughout the archipelagounder systematic organization and ableheadship.
