Hotchkiss during the greater part of thiscampaign has been of great value. We are also indebted to a diarykept by J. A. Waddell, Esq., of Staunton, Virginia. The maps have been prepared by D. C. Humj^hreys, C. E. of theUnited States river surveys, under the duection of, and from thematerial furnished by, Maj. Jed. Hotchkiss, of Staunton, Virginia.Maj. Hotchkiss was topographical engineer for Gen. Jackson duringthis and his subsequent camj^aigns, and possesses by far the mostvaluable mass of topographical data now in existence relating tothese campaigns. Maj. HISTORY OF THE CAMPAIGN OF GEN. T. J. (STONEWALL) JACKSON IN THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA.1861-62. CHAPTER I. EOMNEY. The long struggle between the two great sections of the UnitedStates came to an issue of arms in the spring of 1861. For yearsthe course of events had tended to this result. The North, great andgrowing, filled with the most advanced ideas as to popular govern-ment, human rights, universal equality and fraternity, and tending,because of the immense expansion of commerce and manufactures, toa centralized government, chafed and fretted against the barriersinterposed by a strict construction of the Constitution to an exten-sion gf its civilization over the entire country. The foundations onwhich the Union had been reared seemed narrow and antiquated to apeople whose gro^\th had been unprecedented, and who, by an im-mense infusion of un-English immigration, had lost much of theirreverence for the traditions and principles of the Fathers of theRepublic.
