r keeps freshair in the lungs. It is one of the foremostmethods of prevention against colds. Armymen remark that so long as they are out ofdoors, even if exposed to bad weather, theyalmost never catch cold, but do so often assoon as they resume living in houses. Long breaths taken slowly and rhythmically,say ten at a time and ten times a day arehelpful. Constipation predisposes to colds, andshould be vigorously combated by proper dietand exercise, and regular habits of attentionto the bowel function. Overeating frequently leads to nasal con-gestion. Eat lightly, using little meat orother high protein foods such as white ofeggs, and thoroughly masticate the food. Avoiding undue fatigue will help greatly inpreventing colds. The regular use of nasal douches is not ad-visable. The mucous membrane of the nose isintolerant of watery solutions, and a chroniccongested condition or even infection of aircavities in the skull can be brought about bythe constant use of sprays and douches. When the nose is clogged withsoot or dust, a very gentle spray of a warm,weak solution of salt and water, in the an-terior nostrils, may do no harm. Picking ofthe nose should be strictly avoided. This isa fertile cause of infection. In blowing thenose care should be taken to close one nostrilcompletely and to blow through the other with-out undue force. Otherwise, infection may becarried into the ear passages or the cavitiescommunicating with the nose and give riseto serious trouble. When suffering from acold, gauze or cheese-cloth should be usedinstead of a handkerchief and burned afteruse. Sneeze into the gauze, and thus avoidspraying infection into the surrounding at-mosphere.
