ted the Mission Station, we wentover the Hospital, where we had lunch with Dr andMrs Rodenwaldt. We went home by boat, acrossthe lagoon to the beautifully situated GovernmentHouse. On the 9th we made a bicycling tour of abouteighteen miles round the markets of the lagoon. Iwas amazed at the crowds of people of every race, andat the variety of the wares. We crossed the lagoonand breakfasted in full view of about three hundrednatives who for a time looked on in silence, and thenbegan to dance. In the evening they executed themost wonderful dances, which we watched from theroof of Dr Rodenwaldts house. I have seldom seena more entrancing spectacle; a national costumewas the only thing wanting, for the betrousered niggerssomewhat marred the picture. On the 12th of August I stood on the beach andwatched our baggage being conveyed in small boatsto the steamer. Three capsized and another wasswamped, but the remainder got through the breakersin safety. j 1j 157. Simba on the voyage to Europe.
