THE BATTERY, TLe Dame is derived fromfortifications erected by theDutch founders of the city. It is a public park, has an area of 21 acres with green lawns and shady walks, by far the coolest spotin the city. Castle Garden stands within the limits of the park and wasoriginally laid out as a rough fortification. In 1847 it was opened as aplace of amusement and for a numl^er of years was occupied as such.
