Summary[edit]

Description
English: Ilsington: Haytor Granite Tramway, near to Haytor Vale, Devon, Great Britain. On Haytor Down. The 4' 3" gauge tramway or granite plateway opened in 1820 and served quarries at Haytor Rocks and Holwell Tor as well as some smaller workings. Twelve-wagon trains drawn by as many as 18 horses harnessed in single file took granite blocks to Ventiford Wharf on the Stover Canal, roughly seven miles away. The granite was then trans-shipped again into sea-going vessels at Teignmouth harbour. It was used for the facings of the old London Bridge, now in Arizona, and for major buildings in the metropolis such as the Houses of Parliament and Fishmonger's Hall
