The fort agaia is connected by turretedwalls with a curious Gothic-Mke structure on the summit ofthe hUl where incense is offered up daily. On our arrivalthe whole town turned out and surrounded us with muchcuriosity, for we were the first Europeans that they had everseen. A small tent had been pitched for us, but there wassuch a crowd round it that I retreated to a willow groveclose by, which was protected by a wall. As the Jongpenhad not come to see us, Chheten Wangdi went over to findhim ; presently he came along with a basket of eggs andwith many apologies for not coming before, but he said thathe had had no warning of our arrival.
