As to thedepth of his metaphysics I remain unconvinced; butthere is no doubt that all Indians are conscious of havingbehind them a great religious and legendary—or, as theythink, historic—literature. To the Brahmins has beenconfided the care of the spiritual treasures left behindby their forefathers, while the loves and exploits of thenational heroes have, in one form or another, becomecommon property. The unifying influence of this livingliterary tradition must be apparent ; and it cannot besupposed that even low-class Muhammadans remain quiteoutside it. Many of those who, in the Mohurrum, rendthe air with their frenzied shouts of Ya Hasan ! YaHosein ! are perhaps, in reality, more intimate withArjuna and Krishna than with the saints of their ownreligion.
