Doctor Meister was born at Bay City,Michigan, a daughter of William and Rosa(Schindler) Meister. Her parents wereboth natives of Germany and her fathercame to America from Berlin in 1862. Hermother came over in young womanhood.They were married at Saginaw, Michigan,November 11, 1864, and for many yearsher father was engaged in merchandisingat Bay City. Dr. Doris Meister was the youngest offour children. She was educated in thecommon and high schools of Bay City,graduating in 1889. From childhood shehad shown special ability in being useful intimes of illness and is a natural born nurse.In 1892 she entered St. Marys College atNotre Dame, Indiana, remaining threeyears in literary studies, her parents hav-

INDIANA AND INDIANANS 1817 ing moved from Bay City to South Bend.In 1895 the family took up their homeat Elwood, Indiana, and in 1896 DoctorMeister entered Fairmount Academy atFairmount, Indiana, specializing in chem-istry and laboratory science. At the endof 2!/2 years she graduated in 1899. In1898 the family had moved to Summit-ville, Indiana, and Doris Meister followedher work at Fairmount with a term of gen-eral science and chemistry in the MarionNormal School. At Summitville she stud-ied a year and nine months under Dr.Etta Charles, and from there entered in1903 the Indiana Medical College at In-dianapolis, from which she was graduatedDoctor of Medicine in 1907. All the ex-penses of her schooling she paid from herown earnings, and she had to overcomemany handicaps and face not a few dis-couragements in her determined advanceto win a position in the medical frater-nity. After her graduation Doctor Meis-ter came to Anderson in 1907, and openedan office at 1127 Meridian Street. That
