English: Inscription on the Thomas Hardy monument The inscription reads:
Thomas Hardy, O.M. was born in the adjacent cottage 2nd June 1840 and in it wrote "Under the greenwood tree" and "Far from the madding crowd". This monument is erected to his memory by a few of his American admirers 1931. The monument is shown in context here: 395622. It is not to be confused with the monument to Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas Masterson Hardy, on the other side of Dorchester, in SY6187. |
