Porta Saleria, that behindit were the countless treasures of rare marbles, finearchitecture, old bronzes, priceless tapestries, paintingsunnumbered and Roman excavations carefully arrangedin the most artistic fashion. The fountains were play-ing this afternoon, and the golden sunshine of this earlywinter, which is still most temperate, lent an incompar-able charm to this wonderful Villa Albani. Torlonia isthe name, really, of Giovannis mother, who broughtan enormous dot as her marriage portion to PrinceBorghese of the great Borghese family, that gavePaul V to the Vatican and many distinguished mento history. By arrangement of the marriage con-tract, the great Borghese was to renounce his namein favor of his wife, and the children were to beknown as Torlonia. I think Prince Giovannis titleactually is Prince of Fucino, but no one by anychance ever speaks of him in that way. He is a dep-uty to the Parliament and one of the richest men inItaly, but best of all, he is our good friend.(370)
