791, was the scene of the exe-cution of 63 innocent victims. IN ear the cathedral rises the * Papal Palace (PL 3J, now abarrack, a lofty and gloomy pile, erected by Clement V. and hissuccessors, with huge towers and walls 100 ft. in height. Thefaded frescoes in the Chapelle du St. Office were executed bybimone Memmi of Siena (d. 1339). Rienzi was incarcerated herein 13ol in the Tour des Oubliettes, at the same time as Petrarchwas entertained as a guest. Opposite the palace stands the Ancienne Maine (PI. 2, nowConservatoire de Musique), the mint of the papal peiiod. Thepoital bears a lelief representing flowers, aimorial bearings etc. Pleasant giounds have been laid out on the hill near thecathedral. The best point of view is a rocky eminence in thecentie. The ** prospect, one of the most beautiful in Fiance,embraces the course of the Rhone and its banks; VUleneuve onthe opposite bank with its ciiadel and ancient towers; m thedistance towards the N.W. the (jevennes; N.E. Mont Ventoux ;
