These form the soil on which the silent town behind the castle is built.Every clod of earth which the travellers staff breaks from the mounds all around containssome relic of the dead city. We stand and gaze; we stoop and pick up handfuls of the oldperished splendours; but we cannot re-construct a complete picture by means of them.The street of tombs must certainly have been more splendid and grandiose than that ofPompeii, as is attested by the remains of its pillars, marbles and mosaic pavements. Thetemple of Jupiter must have been equally fine. It stands on a low hill above the city,and must have had an imposing effect from the surrounding plain, both by reason of itsnoble architecture and its brilliant marble facings. The interior walls of brick-work arestill in good preservation, and a flight of marble steps leads up to the golden house of theFather of the Gods. The huge slab of African marble which forms the threshold in frontof the principal entrance is also
