Summary[edit]

Description
English: Jack in the Pulpit (Arum maculatum) Surprisingly common in disturbed, stony ground along the valley of the Bollihope Burn. Also known as Cuckoo-Pint, Lords and Ladies and a multitude of other local names Arum_maculatum http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/c/cucko122.html The club-shaped organ or appendix develops a strong unpleasant odour and a temperature rise of up to 15 degrees above ambient, a 'metabolic explosion' fuelled by starch (thermogenesis). The whole purpose of this is to create a trap for small flies which attempt to land on the appendix but instead fall into the floral chamber enclosed in the lower part of the wrapping spathe. The flies receive food and a shower of pollen during an overnight stay but are eventually released and effect pollination of separate plants nearby.
