Mrs. Forrest E. Kibler 724 Longlead Drive, N.E. Atlanta 9, Georgia Dear Mrs. Kibler: It was good to hear from you yesterday, and I am glad to know that you are well and interested in many projects. I still remember with pleasure meeting representatives of your committee last September on the occasion of the dedication of the Georgia Monument at Gettysburg National Military Park. You stated in your letter of August 10 that you considered the Woolson Monument to the last surviving Union veteran as “handsome and impressive”. I have always though that the monument was quite well done and the statue excellent. I know that you have a difficult job in selecting the type of monument to place because no matter what you select everyone will not be in agreement with your selection, as the tastes and preferences of individual do differ widely. It appears to me that either type monument would be entirely appropriate. You will recall from our previous correspondence that in order to maintain the symmetry and beauty of the Gettysburg battlefield, that it is necessary for the Director of the National Park Service to approve in advance the proposed location of any new monument on the battlefield, and to approve the design, material, and proposed inscription of any new monument. In order to obtain in advance approval of the monument’s design, material, and inscription a scale drawing should be submitted to us in order that it may be forwarded to the Director of the National Park Service for consideration. I am sure that you can appreciate the necessity for this type of control, which is necessary to ensure the accuracy and suitability of the monumentation at Gettysburg.
