Notes
  • 1992 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Entry
  • Significance: The Jeffries-Bruce House, c. 1838 perched on a rise above the James River, represents a select number of fine residences for prominent businessmen and professionals in Scottsville, Virginia during the mid-nineteenth century. This is an excellent period example of symmetry in design and craftsmanship with its Tuscan portico, four matching chimneys and double-pile central passage floorplan over a high basement. Built on land which was at one time part of Belle Grove Plantation, and now part of the Harrison addition, it is included in the Scottsville Historic District which was listed on the National Register in 1976.
  • Unprocessed Field note material exists for this structure: FN-365
  • Survey number: HABS VA-1292
  • Building/structure dates: ca. 1838 Initial Construction
