What is that, Uncle Otto? asked Kitty. That is mutton suet, he answered.Then he uncoiled the wire, placed the sueton the branch, and bound it securely withthe wire. So when I began to thinkhow deep the snow was and how long ithad been cold, I thought I had better opena restaurant for the birds, or some of themmight die; and this is the way I did it. Kitty looked interested, so Uncle Ottowent on. I fasten the suet in place withwire, because if I tied it on with stringthe birds would peck at the string, andtheir dinner would drop to the ground andprobably be eaten by a dog or cat. I tieit high on the tree for the same reason, sothat only the birds shall have it. Uncle Otto had been tying many piecesof suet in place while he talked, and nowthat the last one was secured they turnedback to the house.
