Summary
[edit]DescriptionJoining the two halves, 1990 (geograph 6541498).jpg |
English: Joining the two halves of Leeds 399 at the National Tramway Museum, Crich, Derbyshire. A key stage in the restoration of a double deck tram is the marrying of the lower and upper decks. For reasons of practicability, the two decks are constructed independently (this was always traditional practice). The procedure needed space for the upper deck to be craned onto the lower, so it was always done in the open, with a crane hired for the purpose. The procedure had to take place where there were no overhead wires above the track, so the diesel shunter 'GMJ' was called into use. In practice the overhead would be de-energised anyway, the lift taking place outside normal opening hours. |
