English: U.S. Navy Diver 2nd Class Thomas Liddy waits on the surfaces as the sand-by diver June 8, 2008. Liddy is waiting for the red and green diver to reach the work site. Once he has the okay to leave the surface he will then dive to the work site and tend the umbilicals of the two other divers while the swim in to Juliett 484, a former Soviet cruise missile submarine. U.S. Navy and Army divers along with federal, state and local authorities participate in a joint service operation to raise the sunken former Russian submarine Juliett 484 at Collier Point Park in Providence, R.I. Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit 2, Company 2-1 (MDS CO 2-1), U.S. Army Dive Company and NAVSEA OOC Support Unit prepare to stabilize and recover the former soviet cruise missile submarine that sank at her mooring point in about 30 feet of water during a nor'easter, which struck Providence in April of 2007. This training exercise is part of the DoDs Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) program. Through IRT, military divers receive training by taking part of real-world, community-based projects. IRT and civil-military projects improve military readiness and help rebuild America. (U.S. Navy Photo by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class David Crawford/Released) |
