W. C. Williajvison, of Owens College, Manchester, com-mmiicated to the Eoyal Society, on the 16th November, his eleventhmemoir on the structure of the fossil plants of the coal measures, asthe Bakerian lectm-e. We see from a local paper that there is danger of the inclosureof the Lizard Common, Cornwall. All interested in oui* westernrarities will be sorry to read this. We think that a strong expressionof the feeling of botanists on the subject should be made, and wouldperhaps have a good effect. Henry Lawson, M.D., died at Cork on October 4th. He was formany years editor of the Popular Science Review, and also conductedthe Monthly ^licroscopical Jom-nal from its commencement tillhis death, which has caused the discontinuance of that periodical. The death is recorded of L. Pfeiffer, at Cassel, aged 72. Hislaborious compilations, especially the Nomenclator botanicus(1874), are most useful to all working botanists. The genusPfeijfera was dedicated to him by Salm-Dyck in 1845. Tab. 194.
