an War of 1866, at the end of which he was made alieutenant in reserve. His employment at the United States Navy Yard datesfrom the year 1871, and for many years he remained a faithfuland conscientious technical expert in the Construction Depart-ment. The drafting room has always been his field of labor,and his daily task was to work out the innumerable details thatgo to make up this or that feature of the great vessels of our navy.This he did as well when he was nearly seventy years old aswhen he was in the prime of his life, and his satisfaction lay inthe knowledge that he had performed well his share of thework, whatever it may have been, with all the ability gainedthrough years of ripe experience and faithful application to duty. In fact, his whole life was a duty well performed. He wasfor some years the treasurer of the Technical Society of thePacific Coast, before his brother succeeded him, and he was at onetime the treasurer of the California Association of Civil Engineers. 234
