日本語: 現在のように石油が主要なエネルギーという時代ではなくて、石炭がわが国のエネルギーのもとをなしていたから、常盤炭鉱もまだまだいんしんをきわめていた。いっぱい積み上げた材木も坑道をつくるためで、しっかり貯蔵されていた。炭鉱住宅の中で生活する人たちの唯一の文化的なものといえば、この若い炭鉱夫が持っているバイオリンか何かで、生活と文化との違和感みたいなものが非常に感じられた。そのころは炭住の人たちも、お金を持ってなくても切符があれば何でも自由に物を買えたという。炭鉱の一時の全盛期だった。三木淳 『昭和写真・全仕事SERIES・7　三木淳』 朝日新聞社〈昭和写真・全仕事SERIES・7〉、1982年より。
English: The Tokiwa coal mine was still extremely injured because coal was the source of energy for Japan, not the time when oil was the main energy source as it is today.
