Kinesisk mingskål av kraakporslin, 1579-1620.
Nyckelord: Ming, Föremålsbild, Porslin, Skålar
Description
Porcelain cup decorated in underglaze cobalt blue. Ming dynasty, Wanli period (1572-1620). A delicate cup painted with pond scenes containing many lucky creatures, this beautifully made cup was made for export. Its decoration is in the first and most varied style of porcelain made for the West, called “Kraak ware”. From about 1575 to the end of the Ming dynasty in 1644, Kraak was shipped in vast quantities to Europe, Japan, South East Asia, the Middle East and Mexico (as part of the Spanish trade). The origin of the name has been debated, some believing that it came from the name of a Portuguese trading vessel called ‘caracca’, which the Dutch called ‘kraken’. Others maintain that it derives from the Dutch word kraken, meaning to break easily, or from overmantels called ‘kraken’ used in Friesland to display porcelain. These references and the name “Kraak” itself, reinforce the fact that in the 16th-17th centuries the major European traders were the Portuguese and the Dutch.
