Description
Godset gråvitt, synligt under fötterna. Incense burner. Wanli period (1573-1620).Porcelain incense burner with white slip decoration under cobalt blue glaze, and incised details.Zhangzhou ware, Ming dynasty, c.1600In the late Ming dynasty kilns in Fujian province were active. In the chapter on Monochromes are several examples from the Dehua kilns in Fujian, and this censer comes from a second site, in Pinghe county, close to the great port city of Zhangzhou. In the past collectors designated these as “Swatow wares” (after another port called Shantou), but these days Chinese experts name them Zhangzhou wares. Zhangzhou wares were made for the local country market, and many were also exported. The Japanese especially loved them, because of their sturdy and irregular qualities. The pots were made at speed and roughly finished, often being set down on the ground while the glaze was still wet so that grit adhered to the base. This censer is thick-bodied, with a transparent glaze that is marked and uneven inside, and outside a blue glaze that has been chopped off above the feet where it dripped in firing. The quirky, child-like decoration of lotus buds and leaves springs straight up the side of the vessel.
