s moins heureux pourles beaux arts, cest à dire dans les X.& XL Siècles, il y avait cependant enToscane des personnes qui sexerçaient àla peinture. Mais tout ce qui sortait desmains des. artistes de ces temps la, se res-sentait de la destruction générale apportéedans nos contrées par les barbares. Cestce que prouvent évidemment les deux mi-niatures que nous mettons sous les yeuxdu lecteur. Elles offrent des figures sansproportions, sans attitude, sans ombres,sans perspective ; on ne sait sur quoi ellessont appuyées, les pieds sont mal faits,les mains pointues & dune sécheressetout-à-fait hors de nature. Ajoutons une réflexion qui servira tantpour ces peintures que pour les premièresqui les suivent, cest que les plis desdraperies y sont beaucoup plus vrais quedans les figures de Pierre de Cartone &des autres modernes, qui en les contour-nant & en les maniérant à leur fantaisie& suivant leur caprice, se sont écartés4 du naturel & de la vérité.
