ORIGINES DE L'ARCHITECTURE ROMANE. 8$ Les éléments empruntés à la décoration antiques ont mêlés à des croix et à des symboles chrétiens. On sait combien les représentations de la nature vivante sont rares dans la sculpture ecclésiastique des églises orientales. L'église de Qalb-Louzeh possède, à ce point de vue, un détail curieux. Sur le linteau de la première porte latérale se trouvent deux bustes d'hommes, au-dessus desquels sont gravés en caractères grecs: Michel, Gabriel. Ces deux bustes étaient donc la figure des deux archanges qui, placés au-dessus de l'entrée, semblaient veiller à la garde du sanctuaire. Les portes latérales étaient précédées de porches, les uns en bois couverts d'un toit à double pente et les autres en pierre et formés d'une voûte en berceau.
