La rue François Martin est parallèle à la mer, elle est bordée de bâtiments à façades grises qui appartiennent à l'Ashram de Sri Aurobindo www.sriaurobindoashram.com/ Composé à l’origine de quelques bâtiments, l’ashram de Sri Aurobindo s'est étendu peu à peu dans tout ce quartier de l'ancienne ville coloniale. Tous les immeubles peints en gris et blanc sont situés dans des rues propres et plutôt bien aménagées. Près de 2 000 personnes y vivent, elles disposent d’une clinique, d'une école, d'un bureau de poste, d'une imprimerie. La maison dans laquelle Sri Aurobindo et "La Mère" ont vécu et où se trouve leur tombe, est ouverte aux visiteurs. On y trouve une librairie avec les oeuvres des fondateurs en plusieurs langues. Néanmoins tout ne semble pas parfait dans cet ashram car plusieurs dizaines de plaintes ont été déposées en 2013 par des "résidents" pour maltraitance et harcèlement sexuel ! La ville de Pondichéry a été construite selon un plan « en damier » avec des rues parallèles et perpendiculaires. Un grand canal sépare à l’ouest la «ville noire », la partie indienne et à l’est «la ville blanche», l’ancien secteur colonial qui s’étend jusqu’en front de mer et où se trouvaient les bâtiments publics.
