Minesweeper Construction at Can Car, 1918

Date: 29 July 1918

This image shows the inside of the coffer dam during the construction of Navarin, one of the 12 minesweepers that were produced by the Canadian Car & Foundry during the First World War.

Owing to the current of the Kam River, it was deemed necessary to build a launching basin at the foot of the incline. A coffer dam was built with a basin dug on the inner side. A double track, laid on thick timbers, cross ties, and piles driven into the ground, stretched from under the water up the grade and then to the transfer tables. At the launching slip the cradles were run into the water and the hull simply floated off. When the water level in the slip matched that of the river, the coffer damn was opened and the minesweeper moved into the turning basin.
