World Wide Neuro (https://www.worldwideneuro.com/) is a new and ongoing effort to continue, expand and democratise neuroscience seminars. World Wide Neighbours (https://www.world-wide.org/neighbors/) a new platform to disseminate listings from both employers and job seekers. Today, we are delighted to host Prof. Laura Busse from LMU Munich! Title: Visual processing of feedforward and feedback signals in mouse thalamus Abstract: Traditionally, the dorsolateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) of the thalamus has been considered a feedforward relay station for retinal signals to reach primary visual cortex. The local and long-range circuits of dLGN, however, suggest that this view is not correct. Indeed, besides the thalamo-cortical relay cells, dLGN contains local inhibitory interneurons, and receives not only feedforward input from the retina, but also massive direct and indirect feedback from primary visual cortex. Furthermore, it is one of the earliest processing stages in the visual system that integrates visual information with neuromodulatory signals. In my talk, I will present recent findings regarding the impact of corticothalamic feedback on visual processing of synthetic and naturalistic visual stimuli, and consider the impact of behavioral state on dLGN activity. Together, the results will highlight that dLGN is more than just a simple relay, offering opportunities for feedforward convergence of retinal inputs and being modulated by feedback and behavioral state. |
