License review request (February–December 2023)

[edit]

As I mentioned above earlier, this time, I have uploaded and listed seven incoming files that may get passed.

After I retrieved her DeviantArt profile page, Epicfacepowwaa is now known as Avis Draws. A few incoming files are here:

I'm glad that you finally came back after a few busy months. Here are a few more incomings differently.

Here's the last one you'll pass.
However, I've had a horrible experience with YouTube search being hence futile since they screwed it up in late July; I've had enough of spending too much time browsing videos. Google did the same as well. - The Harvett Vault | he/him | user | talk - 13:51, 19 August 2023 (UTC); edited: 00:40, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Two incoming videos I got. As above, sadly, I miss the old YouTube search.

The Harvett Vault | he/him | user | talk - 13:26, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Everything post-July 2023 is mostly rubbish, while I found a legitimate one and exempted an author: File:Nádia Correia - It's a New Day! (2023).webm - The Harvett Vault | he/him | user | talk - 03:03, 14 October 2023 (UTC); edited: 03:18, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Four more incoming files are three videos and one image.

The Harvett Vault | he/him | user | talk - 14:19, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

First three done, last one I'm not so sure about. It's the background for most of the interview, but I'm guessing the many interviewee book covers shown in the interview were also not meant to be released into CC BY. Can you find something that either says this was made by the interviewer - the channel owner, the one who released the interview - or something that says the artist specifically releases it? --GRuban (talk) 21:13, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for having me partly sick. Speaking about the last file, I have evidence. The creator and host of DopeTalk (archive) is Ethan Polensky (cocadope) (1, 2; archive: 1, 2). Ethan made an illustration for the entire video and published eight episodes in the video version under permissive licenses but not two others, accoriding to Vera's Tool. Also, I, thankfully, avoided showing copyrighted (non-libre) book covers and page illustrations in the beginning, which were made by different artists, not by Ethan. - The Harvett Vault | he/him | user | talk - 13:08, 28 October 2023 (UTC); edited: 11:29, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Am I 85% correct before letting it pass? - The Harvett Vault | he/him | user | talk - 23:41, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
YouTube made every change and update worse as they removed the "about" tab in favour of the pop-up dialogue and the "channels" tab on the channel page. I've provided three archived links as well. - The Harvett Vault | he/him | user | talk - 11:29, 20 November 2023 (UTC); edited: 13:13, 20 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Anyway, I got two of them:

The Harvett Vault | he/him | user | talk - 13:13, 20 November 2023 (UTC); edited: 10:00, 21 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Uhmm... you almost forgot to pass those above. - The Harvett Vault | he/him | user | talk - 01:40, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I extended the maximum limit two more yesterday, so here are those in the follow-up.

(contains a book cover that is, fortunately, de minimis)
(Yes, I removed the audio from the video entirely, which is likely part of DOVA-SYNDROME library. If the licence and FAQ are okay or not, please analyze 'em.)

License review for YouTube file

[edit]

I was wondering if you could review https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Key_Glock_in_2021.png and https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b2/A_Boogie_wit_da_Hoodie.png Shoot for the Stars (talk) 05:59, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This one was tougher than they normally are, for a bunch of reasons.
All of those are usually good indicators that the YouTube user is not the owner of the video, so would not have the rights to release under CC BY. Not to mention that the web page given on the user page, http://DurttyDaily.com/, is now basically dead. However, I did some more research.
So I'm willing to believe that DurrtyDaily used to be affiliated with HOT 107.9, but then left them, and took the rights to the videos they filmed there with them.
  • Similarly, the other video is on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/@JDSportsUS/ but is clearly tagged FINISH LINE and finishline.com in the video itself.
  • And it's not clear where this shot comes from in the video (I had to look hard to find it at 0:30)
  • But fortunately https://www.finishline.com/about-jd explains "Finish Line is now part of the JD brand family ... Members can rack up points in-store and online on both JDSports.com and Finishline.com ..." and so forth So it does look JD Sports could well own this Finish Line video.
I'm partly writing this down in case these images are nominated for deletion or these license reviews are is otherwise questioned, so people can see my reasoning. When you next ask someone to review similarly suspicious videos from either of these users, please, do explain these things so the poor LicenseReviewer doesn't have to do all this investigative work themselves next time! Whew. --GRuban (talk) 13:41, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Template Vimeo

[edit]

Hello GRuban I would like to ask you if you could please make a template like this, but for Vimeo videos please.

YouTube logo This file, which was originally posted to YouTube, was reviewed by the automatic software YouTubeReviewBot, which confirmed that this video was available there under the stated Creative Commons license on that date. This file should not be deleted if the license has changed in the meantime. The Creative Commons license is irrevocable.

The bot only checks for the license, human review is still required to check if the video is a derivative work, has freedom of panorama related issues and other copyright problems that might be present in the video. Visit licensing for more information. If you are a license reviewer, you can review this file by manually appending |reviewer={{subst:REVISIONUSER}} to this template.

Eh. There is already a Template:VimeoReview but it doesn't work as well as Template:YouTubeReview. It seems kind of complex. I asked the guy who wrote it last month, User:Eatcha, in User_talk:Eatcha/Archive/2023#Template:ArrangedLicenseReview? but he didn't answer. He seems inactive. --GRuban (talk) 21:43, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@GRubanAnd how could this problem be solved? Aurelio de Sandoval (Mensajes aquí please) 21:49, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@GRuban It could work?. Aurelio de Sandoval (Mensajes aquí please) 22:24, 1 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You don't have to ping me on my own talk page, I get the notification anyway. Being an admin and a template writer isn't at all the same thing. You can ask - I'm not quite sure where, maybe Commons:Village pump/Technical? I'd mention Template:VimeoReview and say that it doesn't work as well as Template:YouTubeReview, it seems to keep too much of the YouTube stuff and doesn't put things in Category:Vimeo images review needed as it should. I won't do it personally because even though it would help a bit, and if it were fixed, I would use it, I am not good enough with templates to do it myself, and I don't need it enough to go to the effort of making myself better at templates. Similarly, I won't ask, because it's a volunteer project, and I personally prefer doing it myself to having someone do it for me where possible. But you can ask. Good luck. --GRuban (talk) 00:11, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Youtube Screenshot Licence review requests

Hello GRuban. If you have the time I was wondering if you could review some photos in Category:Still images from videos by Tennessee Titans. Specifically:
File:Allan George Tennessee Titans Pro Day.png
File:Arden Key Titans Interview MARCH2023.png
File:Logan Ryan Titans vs Colts DEC2019.png
File:Luke Gifford Titans Interview MARCH2023.png
File:Morgan Cox Titans 2021.png
File:Robert Woods Interview JUNE2022.png
File:Sean Murphy-Bunting Titans Interview.png

Appreciate it, if you can find the time, but completely understand if you're too busy.--Diddykong1130 (talk) 23:25, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Diddykong1130: ✓ Done - I've been a bit busy the past month, apologies. One caveat - File:Morgan Cox Titans 2021.png is a video frame of a photograph, it probably wasn't taken at the same time as the interview. I'm still stamping it as the photo is a posed photo of Cox with Craig Aukerman and another Tennessee Titan, so it's most likely a Tennessee Titans promotional photograph, so they have the right to release it, and I couldn't find the photo elsewhere on the web with a bit of searching, but there is a tiny chance we're going to get in trouble here. --GRuban (talk) 13:06, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate it. Also, appreciate the advisement on that one screen grab - I've always been mixed about that when there is a photo within a YT video if users are or aren't allowed to use. Diddykong1130 (talk) 17:35, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Images from Sister Circle TV has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Waltine Nauta crop photo

[edit]

@GRuban, the File:Walt Nauta as Congressional delegates visit Afghanistan DVIDS131996 (cropped).jpg I think your good crop was potentially improperly overwritten with a insignificant crop that did not improve your cropped photo. I don't have much knowledge about the rules for overwriting files. Should you revert to your original crop? Thanks, -- Ooligan (talk) 02:34, 15 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Bremps: Honestly, I don't see much difference between my crop and Bremps's crop. Bremps, can you explain why your crop is better ... or, for that matter, why it's different? --GRuban (talk) 16:26, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There was a white border on the image that needed removing. Cheers! Bremps... 23:48, 17 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see it now, at the top. Given that, Ooligan, I wouldn't want to restore the white border, and otherwise it's basically the same pic. The rules for that sort of thing are Commons:Overwriting existing files, and in general when major changes are made we are encouraged to make a new file instead, but I think this would qualify as an unambiguous minor improvement and worth overwriting. Thanks, Bremps! --GRuban (talk) 13:36, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hareem Farooq, allegedly. But honestly, could be almost any woman with big sunglasses and colored hair.

Hi! Can you please verify licenses for these files! Thanking in advance!

@Wallu2: ✓ Done, but if I were you, I'd go back and get better screenshots. These are all 1080 px videos (click the little gear on the video bottom right), so you can probably get twice the resolution; also, the last video also has Hareem Farooq, and the only image we have of her has her with big sunglasses so doesn't really show what she looks like. ("But, George, if you're so smart, why don't you do it yourself?" someone may ask. Well, I don't actually know who any of these people are. For example, in the first video, I'm taking your word for it that this is Waseem Badami, as opposed to, say, the white bearded journalist. In the last video, there are multiple women, and I don't know which one Hareem Farooq is; the sunglasses photo we have is that bad for identification. I could probably do more searching and figure it out, but Pakistani actors are not really my specialty. But I'll gladly stamp the images you get to vouch that they are free images.) --GRuban (talk) 14:51, 27 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Licence review request (H1 2024)

[edit]

My journey begins this year. Unfortunately, many users, such as Tom Scott, MatPat (The Game Theorists), etc., decided to break or end their careers by abandoning or closing themselves from YouTube for various reasons.

Anyway, I have three videos listed below, including two entries from YouTube and one other from Vimeo.

Vimeo
YouTube
(I removed the audio from the video entirely for a questionable reason.)

I couldn't find better post-July 2023 videos anywhere throughout the whole days of the month because of how badly YouTube preferred to serve the godawful ones more.

This time, I have listed five more videos imported.

YouTube
(Although the video source is under a CC-BY-3.0 licence offered from YouTube, an author claimed the video under a CC-BY-4.0 licence instead.)
(The background music composed by Kevin MacLeod is present on the credits in the description, but the licence version is a bit wrong.)
(A channel, Rad n Mad, is linked by a user, Eni Talić, which are both legitimate.)

Lastly, here's a bonus entry.

Mostly done, meaning all but the bonus entry - I'm not very good at verifying audio, I'm more of a visual person. --GRuban (talk) 16:45, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Whatever. I have four more in the first half month.

YouTube
(No people but a television comes out.)
Vimeo
(This one is interesting. Although the author claimed the video aspect is 1:1, I determined it is 1.07:1 almost enough.)

It was a bit late after the last half month. I have five more.

It's another time to list seven more I found in the whole month.

YouTube
(It was my first try getting the whole audio to extract vocals only through Acapella Extractor as the result of a slight inaccuracy. A Huh? Cat meme is also gone in that fragment.)
Vimeo
(Importing a subtitle does nothing. I'll try to transcribe it.)
(Although the video has a few issues, which are mediocre quality and improper aspect ratio, I managed to fix it using video filter parameters with FFmpeg. Yet, I provided Kevin MacLeod a credit properly because an author didn't do it after using a music track for his film. However, the film contains graphic violence and gore where a fragment has a horse monster tearing open its body, which is disturbing.)
(Not to be confused with a Harvey Comics character of the same name. An author stated in their post (archive) that they used Ren and Stimpy production music tracks for their film, so I decided to mute the audio entirely.)
(An excerpt uploaded by ComputerHotline was done for license reviewing by a bot reviewer. Here's a full one.)

Before preparing myself to abandon the YouTube search through Invidious conditionally and indefinitely twice on the deadline of April 15, I couldn't find anything original post-July 2023 as it is, therefore, presumably dead and useless nowadays. Here are the results that I searched for about how atrocious it is.

Fortunately, I have five more videos imported from Vimeo that aren't on YouTube, except the first one.

Yep, that's the only one I got here: File:Joseph Jones et al. - Tag Team (2024).webm - THV | | U | T - 04:46, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I couldn't use video2commons as it had caused problems and was unusable, so I switched to SSH temporarily for uploading videos. Now, the last two more I have at the deadline of this half year. These are:

YouTube

- File:Rensaven - Seaside (2024).webm

Vimeo

- File:Melissa Flores - Indigo (2016) (without audio variant).webm

THV | | U | T - 14:16, 16 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The last one has yet to pass, but this time, two more with further explanations are to come.

YouTube
(Thankfully, I had archived the source before the day when the author would change the licence lately, which is irrevocable. Also, there are two fragments that I cut out at the end of the video. On the other hand, the current state of YouTube search is even worse and useless.)
(YouTube does not have a CC0 licence. However, the video says so at the end of the credits.)

I'd like to watch the outcome of Commons:Deletion requests/File:Rensaven - Seaside (2024).webm, and see if the community agrees that animations are in scope just because they are art. --GRuban (talk) 19:19, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

License review request

[edit]

Hi. Can you please review this files: File:Utopia Show (2019) 1.png File:Utopia Show (2019) 2.png IgorRoman10 (talk) 11:20, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done. If you write on each file when in the video it came from, it makes a license reviewer's job easier, especially if the video contains many scenes. For example, that first one is at 2:44 in the video. --GRuban (talk) 16:33, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi GRuban. Would you mind verify licenses for these files? Here: 1, 2, 3, 4. Thanks in advance. CFA1877 (talk) 19:58, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your page Commons:Where is the license on various sites? is super helpful, I appreciate it! Was about to question the copyright status of an image you added to the Rob Kearney (strongman) Wikipedia page, but I can see you're way ahead of me :) Jonathan Deamer (talk) 11:48, 21 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!

The Original Barnstar
Your ability to find images is incredible. You finding an image for Kassandra Frederique allowed me to discover and write on Wikipedia. How do you get these images? Roastedbeanz1 (talk) 05:05, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Experience! I've been doing this for over 15 years now. If you look at my archives, or just my images uploaded count on my user page, my image uploads were few and far between the first years, and only gradually increased as I learned from watching how others did it, and got more confidence. This stuff is hard. My go-tos for finding, in more or less descending order are now:
  • Flickr, with "Commercial use & mods allowed" restriction
  • YouTube, then "Creative Commons" restriction
  • Vimeo, then either CC-BY, CC-BY-SA, or CC-0 restrictions
  • Google Images search for "site:.gov" - especially for US politicians, internationally active politicians and activists of any country, and US scientists
  • Ebay for people likely to have had posters or postcards made of them, before 1989 or so.
  • Newspapers.com search for US people after 1900 and before 1970-1989 or so. The Wikipedia Library subscription is invaluable.
  • Google Images search for "site:.gov.uk" and "site:.go.uk" for UK politicians and scientists, that might have Template:OGL
  • Google Images search for "site:.mil" for US military, and occasionally other military, US journalists, US country music stars
Possibly a few other places I can't think of just yet. Often I only search the first three, or four or five. (I wrote a couple of bookmarklets to make uploading from the second and third easier, but YouTube often changes its site...).
But then there are two or three more steps, which are either to
  • Evaluate whether the Flickr/YouTube/Vimeo license is "good" - in other words, can we trust that the user on that site, who says they release that image or video under a license we can use, actually owns the rights to it? There are a non-negligible number of users who say they do, but probably don't. Some days it seems like half.
  • Pick the applicable license, which generally involves reading the appropriate Category:Commons licensing help by country if it's not the US (and then often being stymied by Template:PD-1996 - often an image will be PD in home country but not in the US!) and/or picking the right US license (as if to make up for the non-US difficulties, the US has Template:PD-US-not renewed, Template:PD-US-no notice, and Template:PD-US-1978-89, which often involve doing more searches in the copyright books, at https://cocatalog.loc.gov/ and https://archive.org/details/copyrightrecords for copyrights and renewals).
  • Then, occasionally, there is defending the license against image deletion; this stuff is complex, and sometimes people make deletion requests for images I upload, and I have to explain and discuss why I think the uploaded did releease it properly, or the license I chose, does apply. (Here's one example; not for my upload, but very similar.) This is rarer, but not unheard of. And sometimes I do get it wrong! This stuff can be hard, and I am human - experienced, I've also been a Commons:License reviewer for years - but still imperfect.
All told, my success rate for finding a free image for any given topic is somewhere between 10-20%. Which is just enough that I don't completely give up, but does mean I have to deal with disappointment often. So, yeah. This can be hard. But can be rewarding, when I get thanks and barnstars like yours! Thank you! --GRuban (talk) 14:15, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This has really helped me find pictures for articles. I apparently missed about 7 pictures for articles I had already written. Thanks. Roastedbeanz1 (talk) 01:38, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Image review

Hello GRuban, Greetings!
Request you to review following images:

✓ Done, half approved, half, I'm afraid, not. You can see why on those pages - basically, news videos will quite often use still images they don't actually own, and I suspect that to be the case for some of these. --GRuban (talk) 15:53, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

File:Donald Runnicles plays piano for the Deutsche Oper Berlin.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hi there, I'm a bit surprised about the licensing of this image. As a license reviewer, you should know that that's not good enough. Rather, this should go to VRT. Is that something you could arrange, please? I note that this image is currently nominated for a DYK. Please ping me if you'd like to respond. Schwede66 06:21, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Schwede66: The original did go through VRT; this is the cropped version. But you are right that I should copy the ticket number there as well, so users don't have to make the extra click to the original. Thanks. --GRuban (talk) 10:46, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That’s great to see. Thanks for clarifying. Schwede66 16:49, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
