An earlier version of Ruscelli's work without illustrations was appended to Paolo Giovio's Ragionamento sopra i motti, & disegni d'arme, & d'amore, che communemente chiamano imprese (Venice : Ziletti, 1556)
Engraved t.p. and double-page ill. on 2I2v-2I3r signed by Domenico Zenoi. The t.p. incorporates the arms of Philip II, to whom the work is dedicated. The ill. on 2I2v-2I3r depicts the army of Charles V crossing the Elbe at Mühlberg and is adapted from an engraving by Enea Vico; see Mortimer. The double-page ill. on S1v-S2r and its repetition following GG2 are signed by Nicolò Nelli, as is the full-page ill. at 2Q4v. Double-page ill. following DD2 and its repetition at 2X1v-2X2r signed G.P.F., for Gaspare Padovano (i.e. Gaspare Oselli), as is the full-page ill. at 2P2v; see Mortimer. The ill. on 2T4v is in the 2nd state, with a tree in the shield of the lower border, while that on 3B1r is in the earlier state with two-headed eagle rather than single-headed; see Mortimer.
