And further, St. Bennetbrought from Rome in his last journey, a certain John, abbot ofSan Martino, precentor (or teacher of music) in the Popeschapel, whom he placed at Wearmouth to instruct his monks inthe chanting the divine services according to the Gregorianmanner, which appears to be the first introduction of music intoour cathedrals. He also composed many books for the instruc-tion of his monks and of those who frequented the schools of his A.pocalypse. ST. BENNET BISC0P. monastery. Among the pupils of St. Bennet was the Venerable ua •■•■■■Bede, who studied in his convent during seven years. After a long life of piety, charity, and munificence, embellishedby elegant pursuits, this remarkable man died about the year703.

Perhapswe might say that St. Cuthbert represented the spirituality, andSt. Benedict of Wearmouth the intellect, of their time andcountry. st. cuth- Cuthbert began life as a shepherd, in the valley of the Tweed, not far from Melrose, where a religious house had recentlysprung up under the auspices of St. Aidan.
