Here St.Catherine and her companions wear the white tunic and scapu-lary, without the black mantle—an omission favourable to thegeneral effect of the colour, which is at once most delicate, rich,and harmonious: and the beauty of the faces, the expression of ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA. 8M tender anxiety and reverence in the nuns, the divine languoron the pallid features of St. Catherine, render this fresco one ofthe marvels of art. As a subject, St. Catherine fainting before the crucifix is ofvery frequent occurrence, but generally she is sustained in thearms of angels, as in the picture by Eaffaello Vanni, and inanother by Tiarini; or, while she sleeps or swoons, angels hoverround her. The Sposalizio of St. Catherine of Siena is variously repre-sented, and often in a manner which makes it difficult to distin-guish her from St. Catherine of Alexandria, except by the habitand the veil.
