| Description |
English: Lesser celandine (Ranunculus ficaria) Late February sunshine has lit the first bright stars of the lesser celandine in the banks and hedges. Although the flowers are small their shining petals give them a striking luminosity - but only as long as the sun is out. They quickly furl up in the shade. Once spring is over even the leaves disappear and all that remains are the peculiar bulbous roots whose resemblance to haemorrhoids gave the plant its alternative name of pilewort: it was used as a remedy. The root clusters, being also shaped like the teats of a cow, were hung up in Scottish milking parlours in the hope of encouraging the yield.
The poet William Wordsworth, better known for his admiration of another yellow flower, wrote no less that three poems in honour of this modest bloom, "prophet of delight and mirth", for which he seemed to have a special affection as the vanguard of Spring.
