ere the Admirals two children, Tom and Kate, werebaptized in 1698 and 1702. Their ages, in 1708, wereten and six, the one a good scholar for his age, theother bright and merry, but both rather delicate. Apicture was painted of the two Fairfax children in about1708, stiff little creatures in grown-up clothes, playingwith a dog. The Admiral was also painted by MichaelDahl, while he was one of the Princes Council; a halflength in powdered wig and crimson coat. A miniatureof him was painted at about the same time. The Admirals daily walk during that summer of1708 was from Searle Street, down the Strand, to theAdmiralty at Wallingford House. The war still con-tinued, and the battle of Oudenarde was fought on 214 WORK AT THE ADMIRALTY. July 11. After a long siege, the town of Lille sur-rendered in October, and the Duke of Marlborough,with Prince Eugene, was fully occupied in the conductof their brilliant campaign. The war had to be main-tained at sea as well as on shore, and the greatestdiligence was used in providing convoys for tradingships, and in supplying the requirements of the fleetunder Sir John Leake. That gallant seaman, who washimself a member of the Board at the time, gave lustreto the period during which Admiral Fairfax held office.In August he took Cagliari, and reduced the wholeisland of Sardinia to obedience to the ArchdukeCharles. In the end of September he assisted GeneralStanhope in the capture of Minorca. Sir EdwardWhitaker, the hero of Gibraltar, succeeded Leake inthe Mediter
