ch mercenaries under the famousBertrand du Guesclin. Pedro was driven out of Castile, andtaking refuge in Bordeaux enlisted the help of Edward the BlackWar in Prince, who, raising an army of English and Gascons, Castile. crossed the Pyrenees, with the intention of restoring Battle of Pedro to his kingdom. At Navarette he routed theN^^rette, Castilians and their French allies, and took Bertrand^^^ du Guesclin prisoner. But Pedro then refused to repay the money spent by Edward in raising his army, whereuponthat prince withdrew in anger to Bordeaux, with an exhausted 1377 THE ENGLISH REINFORCED 201 treasury and a shattered constitution. A dispute broke outbetween young Edward and Charles V. of France in 1369; andall the English possessions in France were annexed by a judicialsentence to the French crown. Conquest followed conquest; andat the end of six years Charles had not only recovered the districtslost by his father, but had also made himself master of far thegreater part of Guienne.
