at Peggy where shestood behind Sarah, gravely staring abouther. To be sure, she said in her most gracioustone. lis the beautiful pipes I have. Andtis proud I am to say the purty young lady,and on she went with a long flattering speechabout Peggys likeness to her swate mother,and inquiries after the ladys health, all thetime she was reaching down from a high shelfan old broken cardboard box, containing herstock of clay pipes. Peggy did not answer. In the first place,thanks to the old womans Irish accent andqueer way of speaking, she did not understanda quarter of what she said. Then her eyeswere busy gazing all about, and her nose waseven less pleasantly occupied, for there was avery strong smell in the room. It was a sortof mixed smell of everything—not like thecurious everything smell that one knows sowell in a village shop in the country, whichfor my part I think rather nice—a smell of tea,and coffee, and bacon, and nuts, and soap, andmatting, and brown holland, and spices, and
