ago froma lad of mine at school in England, oc-curred the following passage: I showedthe photos to Mrs. H and she said Success of the New York Central TenWheel Passenger Engine. In tlio .\iigust number of LocomotiveEngineering, we published line drawingsand a half-tone engraving of 948, one ofthe New York Central ten-wheel passen- freedom from the small defects that causethe brcakers-in of locomotives much an-noyance. The engine seemed perfectlyup to the capacity of the train, and couldprobably haul a car or two more, underfavorable conditions.

Some of the older critics, on bothsides of the water, might learn a lessonfrom the above. The boy being unpreju-diced (for in English schools a hatred offoreign countries is not instilled into thechildren), he was free to opine that we ger engines, then just going into service. We have heard from time to time thatthese engines were doing splendid serviceand that their performance has been awaybeyond the expectation of the manage-ment. The engines have cylinders 20 x 28inches, drivin
