Summary
[edit]DescriptionLondon Barbican station entrance on Aldersgate Street, 1981 geograph-3256175-by-Ben-Brooksbank.jpg |
English: Barbican station entrance on Aldersgate Street, 1981. View northward on Aldersgate Street at Long Lane. This station ('Aldersgate' until November 1910, then 'Aldersgate Street', '& Barbican' from 24/10/24,) was one of those on the first extension to Moorgate Street (December 1865) of the pioneering (January 1863) underground Metropolitan Line (Paddington - Farringdon Street). It was heavily damaged in the Blitz in December 1940, but the lines and platforms were quickly restored. Since the War the station has been rebuilt, along with the Barbican Centre in the area, taking on its present name from 1/12/68, but this unimposing entrance has remained - see e.g. TQ3281 : Aldersgate Street. From the outset the station also served the ex-GNR and ex-Midland services (Thames Link from 1988) to Moorgate from the northern suburbs of London: these joined at Kings Cross St Pancras, branching off at Farringdon, but the Moorgate trains have recently (2009) been withdrawn. |
